Oh boy, how do I do this? I mean, you all know I am a HUGE Jesse Malin fan. I absolutely LOVE him as an artist and I’m crazy about his live shows… His songs, though, are ranging from pure genius to above-average-radio. And I’m not a big fan of the average, as you know. “Disco Ghetto” – which just came out as a single of his latest album “Love It To Life” is maybe one of the few more to average songs Jesse recently did. I’d compare it to Bruce’s “Girls In Their Summer Clothes”. Naw, it’s better than that, and Bruce got a Grammy for his take! It’s a great little tune when Jesse does it solo, raw, only accompanied by his guitar – great story – upbeat – for me, it just doesn’t spark on the record and I blame the production for cutting a few to many edges on it.

But putting superb actors and a great director on the visualization of an average pop song, what can that be good for? Here it creates one brilliant little piece of the – not only lately – much under-appreciated art of music-videos.

This one just takes the lyrics as the script to tell a story in 4 minutes and 5 seconds. And it got to add one of my current all time favorite actresses to play the lead role… I LOVE LOVE LOVE Mary-Louise Parker. I’m a serious Weeds addict (to the TV series only! SIC) for seven years now.

Watching Mary-Louise as a put-upon waitress who dreams of escaping from her misery and boredom at one of Jesse’s shows – is all about going out dancing as a way of temporarily forgetting about the burdens of living – in the middle of a recession that never seems to end. That makes for another genius Jesse Malin video! Go dancing girl! YO ROCKED ME HOUSE!

Jesse, man, I still feel ashamed for missing your show in Essen last year… HOW COULD I LET THAT HAPPEN?

Anyways… ole Tom Petty (An eternal member of my private band of house gods.)… for sure is proud of what you did to his song! Man… That old horse can still jump!

The Boss made a(nother) surprise appearance at the Light Of Day festival (an annual global benefit tour for Parkinson’s Disease) at the Paramount Theatre in Asbury Park. It has been actually the first time that Jesse Malin & Bruce Springsteen played Jesse’s “Broken Radio” live in concert. It’s always good to see favorites of mine coming together – but when it’s THAT good, it almost hurts… wish I could have been there!

I’d call this: The future meets the legend of Rock&Roll… but I won’t. It’s Jesse’s songwriting witch touches me. The story he tells… it’s “Hey ho Rock’n'Roll deliver me from nowhere” in the 21st century. So it’s more than a publicity stunt that the Boss joined on this track. It’s only logical. It’s the common story they tell. It all fit’s together. As does Ryan Adams on guitar.

This is maybe not the typical Malin single. But a wonderful track of his latest release “Glitter in the Gutter”.
