REM: Losing My Religion

Is it just coincidence? The day that Benedikt XVI is visiting Berlin on his first official state visit to his home country, REM announces their retirement and disappearance into the great history of Rock’n’Roll. Now, you can, of course, wonder about their respective relevance… John Lennon once claimed the Beatles would have been bigger than Jesus. REM took a different approach, and Michael Stipe was not actually singing about the pope when he came up with those words:

Ohhh, life is bigger,
it´s bigger than you
and you are not me…

(Losing My Religion – REM 1991)

Quincy Mumford: Sunshine

Summer might be over, but here’s just another excellent reminder how it can feel. Quincy Mumford partnered up with his brother Kyle to get the summer-hit single of his latest album “Speak” shaped into stop-motion pictures, demonstrating what copy machines might originally have been invented for. This video is not (yet) endorsed by Xerox, but it should! Big-time!

Superb songwork! And again, another masterpiece video!

Buy the album! That’s a request!

Ry Cooder: John Lee Hooker For President

When I first came to town people I was walkin’ down Pennsylvania Avenue. I heard a lot people talking ’bout the White House. I decided I’d drop in there that night. And when I got there I said man what’s shakin’. They said look man you can’t come in here this where the President hang out. What you want. I said look man, I’m John Lee Hooker, I sing the blues. They said the President don’t have time for the blues. I said look man everybody got to have the blues sometime don’t matter where you from or where you at…

Nils Lofgren: Too Many Miles

To quote the great Southside Johnny: “Playing on a cruise, that’s like prison, with the chance of drowning…” Here’s Nils Lofgren, cruising the rivers in New York City. Not a place you want to face hurricane Irene’s arrival today… she’s gonna take center stage for a little while. But watching Nils play and listening to his fabulous guitar work, that’s something which might get you through the winds and waters… as long as your Internet connection keeps it going…

I’ve said that about many guitar players… this guy is just way too good for the band he’s playing with… No offense Bruce… but ain’t that nothing but the truth?

Jared Leto & 30 Seconds To Mars: Alibi

Jared Leto & 30 Seconds To Mars were the headliners of last night’s opening of this years edition of Area4, the festival on my backyard in Lüdinghausen, Germany. Just 3 days after the tragedy at Pukkelpop in Belgium, where Jared and the band were supposed to play and just about a week after they incident in Indianapolis, IN, USA, my hometown is hosting the largest festival in Germany on this weekend.

Jared dedicated his song “Alibi” to the victims and their families & friends.

Dave Davies: KinKdom Kome

A Sunday might be the best choice for me to post this BBC4 feature about one of the two brothers who formed the core of one of the best ever bands to come out of Britain. This feature takes a little bit more than one hour, and might be the best hour of your lifetime you’d be investing in watching TV this week… and, hey, since it’s Sunday…!
